Parents Interacting with Infants (PIWI) is an approach used by professionals who work with young children and their families. PIWI focuses on using a triadic approach (professional, parent, child) in order to best support the dyad (parent-child). It focuses on collaborating with parents to provide a developmentally supportive environment for their children by expanding the parent’s knowledge and understanding of their children, building on natural interaction styles, and acting on parent preferences.
Who should attend? Anyone who works with parents of young children (i.e., early childhood special educators, home visitors, parent-child group facilitators, etc.).
As a result of PIWI training, parent educators will:

• Learn about parent-child (dyad) interaction–shared emotion, joint attention, predictability and reciprocity.
• Explore facilitation of the parent-child interaction (triadic relationship).
• Hone observation skills – How does the child communicate? How does the parent communicate? What makes the parent an appealing partner?
• Learn strategies to promote positive interaction – Reciprocal Roles, Match and Follow, Support and Challenge.
• Learn about setting up the environment to promote interaction – careful planning, schedule, space, materials, and roles
