Description

The Soufriere Hills volcano located on the small island of Montserrat is ready to erupt at the same time a Category 3 hurricane is approaching the island from the east. The volcano team calculates rock fall and volcanic tectonic data to predict what will happen with the volcano.   Student teams are formed to help in the disaster.

Operation Montserrat is based on a real historical event. The volcano on the normally tranquil island of Montserrat has come to life. As flaming pebbles and lava begin their devastation, emergency response teams learn a hurricane is approaching. Using real-time hurricane and seismic data, teams of student specialists assist Mission Control in saving the residents from certain destruction. Approximately 2 hours of student team preparation is needed before the student event.

Teachers are active participants and should be part of the day's events including supervision and participation. Sponsoring teachers will need a printed list of all student names present and turned in at check in.

 

Registration Note: By registering for this workshop, your district will be put on the waitlist.  The workshop will stay open for registration until one month before the workshop is scheduled to take place.  Once closed, the available spots will be divided amongst the districts who are on the wait list.
