DescriptionOne of the most important skills that students will need in their careers, post-secondary education and life is the ability to analyze text in order to extract ideas, make judgments about the validity of the text, and evaluate the author’s argument, style and organization of ideas.  Text-dependent analysis is the ability to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, learning and research. To ensure that students master analytical reading, they need instruction and practice in providing evidence from the text and in drawing inferences based on what the text says in order to support their analysis.  Traditional reading programs emphasized reading for the “gist” of the text – to get the overall meaning.  Text-dependent analysis forces students to synthesize the textual information and answer questions that require specific evidence within a text.  Students must demonstrate their ability to interpret the meaning of that evidence and derive a strong argument from the evidence within the text.  The skills of text-dependent analysis are central to student understanding the text in all content areas.  Utilizing high-quality text depending questions to drive understanding and force students to dig for support within a text will deepen their knowledge of the content as well.

In this workshop, participants will:

·   Identify the characteristics and key elements of text-dependent analysis.

·   Contrast text-dependent analysis approaches with traditional use of text.

·   Develop skills in writing high quality text-dependent questions that force student into the text for answers and evidence and lead them to higher levels of thinking and learning about the content.

·   Understand the role of a close reading to highlight key knowledge and information from texts.

·   Learn how to structure a reading assignment that results in higher levels of understanding of the text and the extraction of information to use in writing or sharing about the text.

·   Design a close reading lesson that incorporates text-dependent analysis and that leads to student use of the information from the analysis in some form of writing.
