Description

Along with reading comprehension, writing skill is a key predictor of academic achievement and is essential for success in post-secondary education and in careers.  Meeting the rigorous demands for writing that students need to be college and career ready requires significant changes in how writing is integrated into all content areas.  Being able to read and analyze text is only the beginning of students’ understanding of what they are learning in any content area.  To deeply understand and retain what they have learned, they must think about, organize and share what they have learned. Students need opportunities for extended discussion of text meaning and interpretation followed by writing to share their enhanced understanding of the content.  Writing to argue and inform, a key shift in literacy skills in all content areas, demands that students know how to construct their own text and use text structures that are appropriate to the ideas and concepts they are sharing. In this workshop, participants will explore:

• The role of writing in the learning process

 • Ideas for integrating writing to think and learn

• Strategies for using writing to process multiple sources of information and support TDA writing.

• Important shifts for teaching and learning using writing in the content areas.

Using Writing to Learn Across Content Areas: ASCD Action Tool Kit will be provided for teachers from a school building.
