DescriptionEarly Childhood Special Education Symposium                       Flyer

Target Audience: Early Childhood Special Education Providers, Administrators, and Services Coordinators serving children birth to 5.

Keynote

TOPIC: Understanding the Impact of Prenatal Drug and Alcohol Exposure
Presented by:  Kristie Skoglund, Ed. D, LMHC, IMH-E is the Chief Executive Officer of The Florida Center for Early Childhood and Tamra Cajo, LCSW is the Director of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Clinic at The Florida Center for Early Childhood.

DESCRIPTION:
Misdiagnosis is often common for children affected by drug or alcohol exposure in utero. There are various overlapping symptoms; however, the approach to these children differs based on the etiology of the symptoms. While there are techniques that may address the behavioral and learning needs of individuals with other diagnoses, these same techniques may not prove effective and may even exacerbate the difficulties of children who have experienced drug or alcohol exposure in utero. This presentation will provide an overview of the impact of prenatal drug and alcohol and effective interventions to support this population.

OBJECTIVES:
Participants will gain knowledge of the short- and long-term effects of drug and alcohol exposure in utero.
Participants will understand the varying needs for children with brain-based differences and resources for advocacy.
Participants will learn to develop and apply successful strategies in different settings for children with drug and alcohol exposure in utero.
