DescriptionEven if primary school students cannot yet read independently, they can begin to develop the skills and habits of mind they need to become critical thinkers and processors of text.  It is never too early to set the stage for reading habits that will enable students to dig deeply into text and find evidence to support their opinions and arguments.  Text-dependent analysis is the ability to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to find answers to questions that help the reader understand what the author is saying, analyze how the say it, and determine its effect on the reader.  Instead of relying on prior knowledge to answer questions, students who are given high-quality text dependent questions are guided to investigate the text at higher levels of thinking and analysis, thereby honing their skills in becoming analytical readers and writers.

In this workshop, participants will:

·         Identify the characteristics and key elements of text-dependent analysis.

·         Contrast text-dependent analysis approaches with traditional use of text.

·         Develop skills in developing high quality text-dependent questions that force students into the text for answers and evidence and lead them to higher levels of thinking and learning about the content.

·         Understand the role of a close reading to highlight key knowledge and information from texts.

·         Design a close reading lesson that incorporates text-dependent analysis and that leads to student use of the information from the analysis in some form of writing or sharing.
