Description | | The Heartland Future City Tournament will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Educational Service Unit #3, 6949 South 110th Street in Omaha. Registration opens at 12:00 noon, judging begins at 12:30 PM. Awards will be announced at approximately 4:30 PM. This
event is sponsored in part by ASCE - Nebraska Section. The public is invited to attend.
Tournament team registration is due January 4, 2013 by 4:00 PM.
In addition, there is a Team registration which must also be completed. See flier attached to the workshop information on the ESU #3 website.
- First-place winners will join teams from 39 other regions for an all-expense-paid trip to the 21st annual Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C. during Engineers Week. The National Engineers Week Future City Competition is sponsored in part by the National Engineers Week Foundation, a consortium of professional and technical societies and major U.S. corporations.
- Future City, the nation's largest engineering education program and among the most popular, students first create cities on computers using SimCity software and then build three-dimensional, tabletop models to scale. To ensure a level playing field, models must use recycled materials and can cost no more than $100.
- Students also write brief abstracts describing their city and must present and defend their designs at the competition before a panel of engineer judges who test the depth of the teams' knowledge. **Student knowledge is often astonishingly evidenced by the essays which require 6th through 8th graders to explore complex challenges that most adults would consider out of their league
- December 20, 2012 Deadline: The Future City design file completed in SimCity, the Virtual City Benchmark Form, the City Narrative paper and City Narrative Form should all be to ESU #3 to jthomsen@esu3.org
- January 6, 2013 Deadline: The Research Essay Form and Research Essay are to be emailed to jthomsen@esu3.org no later 4:00 PM.
- All other tournament forms are due the day of the tournament
Questions about the registration and forms should be directed to jthomsen@esu3.org
