Description

Susan Ebbers, author of Vocabulary through Morphemes and other literacy books will involve participants in an engaging combination of activity and lecture.  Participants will focus on several interrelated objectives that facilitate vocabulary growth, ultimately to boost comprehension. Participants will learn more about how to:

  • Kindle interest in words, phrases, sentences, and language in general
  • Build knowledge of “how words work” via prefixes, suffixes, roots (morphemes).
  • Sort words into morphological families, groups of words that share the same root.
  • Practice breaking words down into morphemes, to show students how to more readily read, spell, understand and remember longer, more complex words.
  • Practice ways to teach students to use context clues to understand unknown words. This includes examining the most common types of context clues.
  • Model the Outside-In Strategy for inferring word meaning from context clues combined with morpheme clues (roots and affixes).
