| Description | | In 2017 the Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency following significant increases in opioid-related deaths in the United States. Since that time, the opioid epidemic has gained momentum, particularly in regard to the impact on children and families. Schools are faced with trying to understand this epidemic as well as how it impacts their students, families, and communities. As schools strive to address mental health needs of students, it is imperative they understand the opioid epidemic and how the two are intertwined.
This training will:
*Provide a historical perspective of the opioid crisis and how we got to this point
*Debunk myths surrounding the opioid epidemic and what it means for Nebraska communities and schools
*Define opioid use and misuse in Nebraska
*Identify how the opioid crisis impacts schools
*Highlight links between mental health and narcotic misuse
*Identify action steps and preventive measures to include resources for families as well as multi-tiered systems of support
*Provide opportunities for networking as well as Q and A with Federal Agents
There will be a middle school/secondary focus, and is suitable for building leadership, school resource officers, and staff who support the social-emotional needs of students and families. This training will be appropriate for urban, suburban, and rural communities. For those unable to travel/attend in person, this training will also be available via Zoom.
