DescriptionTeaching the “Must Have” Skills to Students with Autism and Complex Needs

Audience:  This training is appropriate for teams working with students of all ages with more complex needs and could include resource teachers, SLPs, OTs, PTs, counselors, school psychologists, general education teachers, parents and administrators.

Description:  Did you know there are very specific skills that will help individuals with Autism live a happy, fulfilling and productive life?  Without these skills children and adults with complex Autism will likely exhibit problem behavior, have less access to preferred items, places, people, limited interaction with their community and have fewer opportunities for independent living.  This workshop focuses on students of all ages who present with early learner profiles and often limited language but many of the skills can be generalized to other students with Autism.

This workshop will describe a variety of important “must have” skills and provide teaching steps for these skills. The steps will include a combination of  direct teaching and teaching skills functionally, in the natural environment.  

Participants will learn:  The important skills that should be in a program for a student with complex Autism
-Why these skills are important
-Steps for teaching these specific “must have” skills/prompts and prompt fading
-How to teach these skills using a combination direct teaching and natural environment training

Through video modeling and Behavior Skills Training(BST) participants will have the opportunity to observe these “must-have” skills being taught, while having time to practice teaching these skills with feedback provided from instructors. Participants will leave this training with a plan to start teaching these skills with their students.
